Gear Fail: The Fi Collar Broke, My Dog Got Loose

My doggy snapped the leash attachment ring on her Fi Intelligent Collar less than three months following I got it. So I spoke with Fi to get to the bottom of it.

For a minimal less than three months, I’ve been screening the Fi Intelligent Collar. The collar has some neat know-how that permits you to monitor your dog’s GPS location with your cellphone. All that is well and superior, and I wrote about it a ton on my 1st review, listed here.

I snapped this photograph ideal following the collar snapped with no warning

But previous weekend, the D-ring that attaches the collar to a leash snapped cleanse in fifty percent following a significant tug from my overzealous (but only 40-pound) German shorthair pointer puppy dog.

Thankfully, we ended up in a park and she was also sporting a coaching collar, so I could remember her quickly. If it had transpired in close proximity to a fast paced highway, the equipment defect could simply have led to disaster.

Fi Intelligent Collar Broke

I’m not heading to go into the review of the Fi Intelligent Collar’s monitoring and notification attributes listed here I coated that in depth in an earlier review. But suffice to say it will work well, and I really like the stability it gives my pup.

And this is in part why I’m so let down.

Fi selected to use a zinc-primarily based alloy termed Zamak 2 for its D-ring on its collar. We reached out to the manufacturer when the collar broke, and its CEO quickly (and politely) responded.

Zamak 2 Doggy Collar Attachment

If you are like me, you probably do not know considerably about Zamak 2. Fi’s CEO, Jonathan Bensamoun, defined that the manufacturer selected to use it for its collars due to the fact it “provided a superior mix of resistance and layout abilities. Zamak 2 is a very well-identified steel that presents the strongest resistance for these use instances,” he wrote to me in an e-mail.

That may well be the situation, but following on the lookout into Zamak 2 on some metallurgy web-sites, I identified it is weaker than stainless steel by just about each and every measure. Far more imporantly, the D-ring just appears to be slim when compared with these in most qualified-use collars. Compare it with the D-ring on the burly collar I got from a doggy coach, down below.

In Fi’s defense, its D-ring is utilised on lots of collars at significant brands like Petco, Bensamoun defined.

“The production line we use for these parts are the same utilised by Petco and other mass collar makers. We would under no circumstances function with a vendor that is not now established in the marketplace and put dogs at chance,” he wrote.

Fi requested me to send the collar again so it can examine the broken D-ring. I will update this report with any far more info from the manufacturer as soon as its investigation is total.

How the Collar Broke

Even however my pup is still not very significant, she’s spunky! I’m doing work really hard to train her suitable casting with a whistle and examine twine. I’m also doing work on her on-leash heeling. She’s accomplishing well but still tugs really hard from time to time.

That was the situation on Friday. Soon after function, I took her to the park. Of class, there was a flock of one hundred geese, and she needed to get at them. All it took was a person remaining tug, and the twine went limp. It felt like getting rid of a fish. And then a little bit of horror established in as my seven-thirty day period-aged, modestly qualified puppy dog bolted throughout the park in the center of a city.

A number of vibrations on her coaching collar got her attention, and inside of a moment I had her again at my heel. Fantastic doggy!

But I shuddered to think of what would have transpired if the failure had transpired just a number of minutes earlier as I’d crossed a fast paced city street. Out of all the tugs she’d put on the collar over three months, this a person transpired at a person of the safest situations.

I counted my blessings, cursed the collar, and headed household.

What is Subsequent for Fi

A doggy collar is a safety system like a seatbelt. It keeps your doggy safe and sound when it needs to operate, and it keeps other folks safe and sound from angry dogs. And it are unable to bodily fail.

Fi’s CEO pointed out that it is very really hard to have best excellent control in production, and I respect that problem. But the Fi collar I have been making use of did not strike me as defective when I received it. It just appeared weak, notably in the D-ring. And even though the manufacturer pull-checks its collars to one hundred kg in production, that really isn’t considerably pressure for a static impression. Climbing carabiners are rated into the 1000’s of kilos for a cause!

Fi created a very awesome, techy item. But I’m leery of its means to control a strong doggy. Given that I now compensated for a year’s subscription, I’ll probably still use it as a tracker on my doggy. But I’ll often use a diverse collar to attach a leash. And for $150 for the collar and yet another $one hundred for the subscription, this is bummer.
