New Puppy Tips That Will Help You Know What To Do

By Delia

Bringing a new puppy to your home is going to impact your life in more ways than you know. There is nothing better than having a warm and cuddly companion at home who is always happy to see you.

But before the relationship can reach a high level of quality, there are some foundational protocols to observe. Here are some important new puppy tips to consider before bringing your new friend home.

Make Sure You Have Time To Train

Your dog is not going to just integrate itself into your life like a plush toy. It’s going to take some work. Just like any relationship, good communications is something that has to be nurtured and cultivated.

Your puppy will need plenty of attention, play time and instruction to grow into an integrated member of your household. The alternative can be fraught with bad behavior and heart-breaking misunderstandings.

Training Needs To Be Consistent

Your puppy will be looking to you to see what kind of relationship to expect. Well-behaved and well-adjusted dogs are a delight and joy to all especially you as their primary companion. Take advantage of their pliable nature and juvenile mental-absorption by stimulating their minds with positive reward-based education.

There are some important new puppy tips to applying rules that will make new tricks and rules easier to introduce. These rules will also make it easier to control your dog as they grow up, which is just safer for you and them.

Potty Time

Let puppies know where they can find the “facilities” (designated poo and pee zone). This is much easier than most people think but it does require paying close attention.

No Biting Allowed At All

Your puppy will begin teething soon and this can lead to playful biting and nibbling that can set serious bad habits for the future.

Teach your dog to not bite you even though it seems fun. You must teach them not to bite things in the house. Remember how many dogs die each year by chewing electric cables. Always provide them with alternative items on which they can cut their teeth.

Sit And Stay

As soon as they show adequacy, teach your dog the essential rules of sit and stay. These vital commands can save your puppies life and keep them from making problems in the future.

Make sure your puppy can respond to these basic commands when they are given by your spouse, kids or roomie as well.

Make Your Home Puppy-Proof

There are hazards all around your home that you may not have been aware of. Keeping your puppy trained will enable you to avoid many of these.

However, when your dog is just a puppy, you want to make sure that garbage is kept tightly stowed, left over chicken wings are not left where they can grab them and choking hazards are immediately collected.

Take time to study the lists of common household toxins that should be kept away from your puppy.

Socializing

You want your puppy to grow into a confident and respectable member of society, and this training starts young. Your puppy will benefit from lots of positive interactions with people, other dogs, and even cats. Be sure the friends you bring to play with the new puppy are good natured and friendly, just like you hope your puppy will be.

Don’t Make Your Puppy Fearful

Puppies can be easily frightened and it’s very important to deal with fears and anxiety in a healthy manner. For example, don’t encourage more fear by overreacting to frightening situations.

Make sure you slowly and patiently introduce them to necessary situations that could cause them anxiety, like being left alone at home or taking a trip to the vet.
